ENT Visit

We saw ENT about his tonsils, he said they were still large and he qualifies for surgery. There are four classifications, four being the worst. Lucas is a "3", one step away from the tonsils actually touching in a "4". He went through the results of the sleep study with me and he said he is very pleased that although Lucas is having episodes of apnea, his saturation levels are not dropping into a dangerous zone. His lowest drop was to 90%, they worry more about the oxygen dropping in the 70's or lower for the body to continue receiving what it needs. And, the study showed with oxygen on him when he sleeps, apnea does not occur at all.

We mutually decided to wait until the spring of next year so Lucas can get a little bigger and stronger. We will keep him on oxygen at night to ensure that he doesn't have episodes, and most importantly, stays in a deep state of sleep for optimum weight gain. Its kind of hassle to keep him on oxygen and he fights putting the cannula on, but we feel it is a good compromise to hold off putting him through another surgery and for him to be stronger.

We also talked about the plastic surgery for his nose (the ENT doctor knows our plastics doctor very well). His recommendation was also to wait on that. He said rhino surgeries are much easier to do when the nose is larger, and the more time we can give Lucas to grow, the easier and more successful the surgery will be. Plus, since we learned that Lucas's arms will have to be splinted for 3 weeks after the surgery, we are in absolutely no rush! I can't imagine taking away his ability to put his hands or objects in his mouth because this sense is so important to the development stage he is in. I assume we will do it when he is about three years old.
